What is a sure Hoosier signal that summer is pretty much over?
The annual Penrod Arts Fair at Newfields.
Billed as “Indiana’s Nicest Day,” Penrod has claimed the Saturday after Labor Day since 1967. With ticket prices at $20 per person (10 and under are free), the entrance fee gets you on the grounds for the day. The entire campus is yours to explore from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Five different stages will host live entertainment throughout the day. Do you like bands? Choral arts? Dance? Orchestra? Whatever gets your heart singing, there’s a good chance you can find it.
Feel like eating a meal or two? You’ll find enough choices to tickle your palate and fill your belly. As with most things at Penrod, electronic payments are the best option. Very few vendors, if any, will accept cash.
Once you’ve sampled the culinary arts and satisfied your entertainment needs, wander the grounds to experience all of the artists and their wares. You can outfit yourself with a new piece of jewelry, find the perfect oil landscape you’ve been looking for to grace that blank wall, or claim that sculpture to put in the garden. No matter what you are looking for, only the best of show end up at Penrod. You cannot go wrong when you find that one-of-a-kind original to carry home.
Parking is easy. There are some spots available on the grounds for $40, but the majority of people will park for free at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and a shuttle will deliver you right to the gate. If you are hoofing it, make sure to enter on 42nd street, which has the pedestrian-only gate.
Only trained service pets are permitted as per Newfields established guidelines. Please leave your support animals to have a day of rest because the grounds are crowded.
Bags larger than a small computer bag will be subject to being searched. So call your friends. Gather your family. Plan your adventure. And head to Newfields to experience a classic end-of-summer, almost-fall day. As the Yosha Synder Group knows, it’s the nicest day the city puts on.
